A Major Electricity Supply Project Worth 201 Million Afghanis Inaugurated in Uruzgan

April 29, 2025, the Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, inaugurated a major electricity supply project extending from the Kajaki Dam to Dehrawood district of Uruzgan province.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Deputy PM stated that such clean energy projects not only enhance Afghanistan’s resilience against climate change but also make a valuable contribution to global climate preservation.

According to him, Afghanistan has long relied on imported electricity, and a significant portion of national revenue is spent on it.

However, imported electricity is expensive on the one hand and is neither a reliable nor sustainable source on the other.

Therefore, projects like this that utilize domestic resources for electricity generation can gradually reduce Afghanistan’s dependence on imported electricity and lead the country toward self-sufficiency.

Pointing to the value of clean energy, the Deputy PM stated that such electricity generation projects rely on cost-effective sources, prevent the emission of harmful gases, help in the fight against climate change, bring stability and sustainability in the energy sector, increase the level of investment, production capacity, and employment in the country, reduce the outflow of foreign currency, and significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Deputy PM Mullah Baradar Akhund also remarked on the damages Afghanistan has suffered due to global climate change.

He noted that Afghanistan has played no role in the degradation of the global climate, yet, unfortunately, it has been adversely affected by the climate impacts caused particularly by major industrial and manufacturing countries.

While many clean energy projects were halted by international organizations following the Islamic Emirate’s rise to power, several of them have now been restarted and inaugurated by the Islamic Emirate.

The Deputy PM called on the United Nations and international organizations supporting clean energy to fulfill their shared responsibility by cooperating with Afghanistan in the production of clean energy and to resume the projects that were previously suspended by international institutions.

It is worth mentioning that this electricity supply project from Kajaki Dam to Dehrawood district of Uruzgan province is being implemented by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat with financial support amounting to 201 million Afghanis.

Upon completion, the project will provide electricity to around 4,500 households.
