The International Taste Institute has announced the results of its 2026 evaluations, once again naming Herat saffron as the world’s most delicious saffron.
This marks the 10th time the renowned Afghan product has won the prestigious “Best Flavor” award, further cementing Afghanistan’s place among leading global producers of high-quality goods.
The award is granted based on rigorous sensory assessments, including color, aroma, and flavor, highlighting the exceptional quality of Herat saffron and its strong standing in international markets.
In recent years, saffron cultivation has emerged as a successful alternative to opium poppy farming, providing sustainable livelihoods for thousands of families—particularly in Herat province—through production and export.
Previously, the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment reported that more than 22 tons of Herat saffron, valued at approximately $30.035 million, were exported to international markets during the first six months of this year.
