Israel announced on Sunday that it will permit the entry of a limited quantity of food into the Gaza Strip, citing efforts to prevent a potential famine in the besieged enclave.
“A basic quantity of food will be allowed in to prevent the emergence of a hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip,” read a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The statement warned that a famine could undermine the continuation of Operation Gideon’s Chariot, the latest phase of Israel’s intensified ground offensive in both northern and southern Gaza.
According to the government, the decision follows recommendations from the Israeli military and reflects operational considerations intended to support the broader campaign to defeat Hamas.
