In a surprising announcement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Monday that he will resign from his position as Canada’s leader and as head of the Liberal Party once a new party leader is elected.
Addressing reporters in Ottawa, the 53-year-old Trudeau expressed his decision to step down, emphasizing that the suspension of Canada’s parliament will remain in effect until March 24, allowing for the leadership transition.
Trudeau acknowledged his “one regret” is not reforming Canada’s election process, particularly as a general election looms this fall. “If I have one regret, particularly as we approach this election — well, probably many regrets that I will think of,” he remarked. “But I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice, or a third choice on the same ballot.”
