Macron to Discuss Ukraine Peace and Trade with Xi Jinping

French President Emmanuel Macron, on a state visit to China, is set to meet President Xi Jinping to discuss peace in Ukraine and access to the Chinese market.

The talks are drawing significant attention in the European Union, as Macron is expected to convey a message from the EU while addressing trade issues. Ahead of the meetings, he posted on X: “My discussion with the Chinese President will focus on peace and economic rebalancing, which the world so desperately needs.”

Macron faces pressure to persuade China to influence Russia toward a ceasefire in Ukraine. This marks his fourth state visit to China since taking office. He is also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang before traveling to Chengdu on Friday for another meeting with Xi.

The visit follows recent discussions between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Ukraine’s strategy and potential ceasefire conditions as the conflict nears its fourth year. China has maintained a neutral stance on the Ukraine war, similar to its position in recent Middle East conflicts.

Trade is another key focus of the visit. Last year, the EU recorded a $348 billion trade deficit with China, with China alone accounting for 46 percent of France’s total trade deficit. Macron has previously urged the EU to reduce dependence on Beijing and prioritize European tech industries. During this visit, both countries are expected to sign agreements in sectors including energy, food, and aviation.
