The Syrian Minister of Finance in the caretaker government, Mohammad Abazeid, has announced a 400% salary increase for many public sector employees, set to take effect next month.
This measure follows the completion of administrative restructuring in various ministries to enhance efficiency and accountability.
The salary increase is estimated to cost approximately 1.65 trillion Syrian pounds, equivalent to about 127 million US dollars. It will be funded through existing state resources, regional aid, new investments, and efforts to unfreeze Syrian assets abroad.
In an interview with Reuters, Abazeid described the salary hike as the first step in addressing the country’s economic challenges, adding that public sector employees will receive their salaries for the current month this week.
Earlier, Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the new Syrian administration, also announced the 400% increase as part of a broader effort to improve living conditions in the country.
