Continuing Moscow’s efforts to improve diplomatic relations with Kabul, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at a press conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, that the Islamic Emirate currently rules Afghanistan, emphasizing the need to strengthen relations with the country.
Putin highlighted, “Our relations with Afghanistan are always a priority. While the nature of relations with the current Afghan government is a separate issue, it is crucial to acknowledge the Islamic Emirate’s sovereignty over Afghanistan.
We are engaging with various partners in Central Asia and will collectively decide on this matter.” In response, Suhail Shaheen, head of the political office of the Islamic Emirate in Qatar, praised Putin’s statement and expressed readiness for positive relations with Moscow, stating, “We appreciate the Russian president’s stance on Afghanistan and are prepared to engage with the Russian Federation.”
Some political analysts suggest that closer ties between Russia and Afghanistan could lead to the recognition of the Islamic Emirate. Recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned that the Islamic Emirate holds significant power in Afghanistan, indicating Moscow’s interest in lifting sanctions against it.
