The United States has carried out airstrikes against Daesh targets in northwestern Nigeria, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, claiming the group has been targeting Christians.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the strikes were launched on his orders as commander in chief, describing the operation as “powerful and deadly.”
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS (Daesh) terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily innocent Christians,” he wrote.
Trump added that he had previously warned the group to halt attacks against Christians, saying: “If they did not stop the slaughter of Christians, there would be hell to pay—and tonight, there was.”
