During the recent summit in Alaska, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly demanded control over the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, offering to forgo other occupied territories in return for a peace agreement.
These proposals emerged from multiple news sources citing individuals close to the discussions. U.S. President Donald Trump echoed this position by expressing willingness to pursue a comprehensive peace deal—rather than a temporary ceasefire—potentially involving such territorial concessions.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected any notion of ceding territory to Moscow without Ukraine’s free and constitutional consent.
Russia already controls a significant share of Ukrainian land—about one-fifth of the country, including much of Donetsk and Luhansk.
President Trump has since arranged a meeting with President Zelenskyy in Washington, D.C., raising the possibility of a future trilateral summit with Putin.
