President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order rebranding the Department of Defense with its original name, the Department of War, which was used from 1789 until 1947.
According to administration officials, the move designates “Department of War” as a secondary title, allowing the change to proceed without congressional approval for a formal renaming of the agency.
“We won the First World War, we won the Second World War, we won everything before that and in between,” Trump said during the signing ceremony. “And then we decided to go woke and changed the name to the Department of Defense.”
