Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding UN Security Council Resolution 2721

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan expresses its concern regarding the recent resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council, which appoints a special representative for Afghanistan. The Afghan government was disappointed by the lack of consultation and the hasty decision-making process, as it had requested more time for discussion and clarification regarding the evaluation of the special coordinator by two permanent members.

The government of Afghanistan firmly believes that the appointment of an additional special representative is unnecessary, given the current active presence of the United Nations Special representative (UNAMA) in the country. Afghanistan is actively engaged in addressing the conflict and has a functioning central government that is capable of protecting the country’s interests, fulfilling its obligations, and managing issues through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its commitment to working with the international community, including the United Nations, to promote peace, stability, and development in Afghanistan. It urges all parties involved to respect the sovereignty and independence of Afghanistan and to support the government’s efforts in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the country.

It is important to note that the involvement of special representatives has not only failed to resolve conflicts in recent history, both in Afghanistan and globally, but has also complicated the situation further by imposing foreign perspectives. While we appreciate the United Nations’ positive efforts to enhance and broaden engagement with Afghanistan, our approach will always be rooted in the unwavering religious beliefs, cultural values, and national interests of the Afghan people.

Based on this, we kindly request the United Nations organization to consider the existing realities and take them into account when making any decisions pertaining to Afghanistan. It is crucial that decisions are not influenced by any particular side and remain impartial and objective. We believe that a fair and unbiased approach will contribute to a more effective and sustainable resolution of the issues at hand.
